I obviously can't check this right now, but I think one example of this was Line 36 of last year's 1040, the sum of all your adjustments. However, even some lines that initially look like they should be arithmetic only actually aren't. All that is without the Schedule SE/C-EZ that I've had to file in previous years.Įven the Free Fillable Forms online can't do all arithmetic for you, so you can make simple mistakes.Įdit: Because of the downvote, maybe I need to clarify? Some lines it will do, if there's no choice. This actually happened to me and caused me to completely forget about a simple deduction and I had to start from scratch again. To recap: 1040 required not only schedule 1, but also a worksheet and a form for a tax credit, that form sent me to another worksheet, and both forms required information that was on the 1040, but the other information they required had to be dug up from another schedule and form. The placement of credits and deductions on the form can force you to come to a FULL STOP and send you navigating a worksheet midway through the instructions, and depending on your situation can lead you to another form and worksheet in the middle of the first one, and one of the questions on the second one has you going to complete a worksheet at the end of the instructions, and overall leads you in a convoluted drunken walk across the form.
